Data with DJ Manifesto

The amount of data available to us has grown exponentially. Unfortunately our skills with data haven’t.
The truth is that most of us were never given the tools. But we need them now more than ever.
We’re bombarded with numbers each and every day—from social media, politicians, advertisements, media outlets, and so much more. How do you even begin to make sense of it all?
With data literacy skills.
If that sounds intimidating, I promise you it doesn’t have to be. Everyone, regardless of their educational background or interests, regardless of how much they hated or despised math and numbers growing up, can—really, truly can—level up their data literacy abilities.
A future in which you take control of interpreting the numbers that come your way is within your reach. And it begins with data literacy.
Say what?
What is data literacy, you ask? And, more importantly, why should you care?
Data literacy is defined by Wikipedia and others as the “ability to read, understand, create, and communicate data as information”.
Data literacy to me means being able to see data, charts, numbers, figures and make sense of it all.
Say Why?
Maybe you’re thinking: “Isn’t data literacy something for the “tech people” to worry about? Can’t they figure it all out and just tell us the answers later?”
Quite the opposite in fact. You risk being misled each and every day in terms of what to believe, what the reality of the world is, even what to eat and drink when you lack data literacy skills.
That data is open and available for other people is not enough. You need to equip yourself with the tools and the know-how to turn the data and information you come across into knowledge and wisdom so you don’t risk being misled.

Data is the building block on the way to greater knowledge and in turn wisdom. Data literacy is the skill needed to scale from data to wisdom and insights.
So buckle up, my friends. It’s time to say good-bye to bad data.
